Shadows of Self picks up about a year after The Alloy of Law with Wax trying to track down associates of the perpetrators from the first book. There’s significant discontent in Elendel because of poor working conditions and pay and rampant corruption in the city. The governor’s brother and several crime bosses are murdered and Wax believes the governor is next. They have to handle this while the murderer is stoking unrest in the city. I enjoyed this a lot more than Alloy of Law, partially because it feels much more like a Mistborn story. The three types of magic matter in ways they didn’t in the first book and I appreciated the deeper connections to the original trilogy.
