I’m not at the staff engineer point in my career, but I picked up this book after a conversation with my manager about my career goals and expressing my desire to be a technical leader rather than a people manager. This book is an excellent view into what the individual contributor job looks like at higher levels. It explains how to find ways to work effectively in your organization and amplify your impact, as well as managing your own career goals. Even though I’m not in a staff engineer role, I found a lot of what this book talks about directly applicable to my own work. There’s so much useful information in here that I’ll read it several more times over the course of my career.
