This was recommended by a colleague in the orchestra I play in and I enjoyed it for the most part. This book deals with the start of a war between competing societies in a world where all the people live in spires high in the air. It follows a disgraced airship captain and a handful of young aristocrats as they work to defend their spire. The setting and technology were pretty cool and I enjoyed the story for the most part. However, several of the characters were awful. Two of the aristocrats are teenage girls who are pretty bad caricatures of teenage girls whose actions were often contradictory. I think the worst example was one of them going to the bridge of the airship, being in the way (by her own admission), and staying there just so the captain had an avenue for exposition. Overall I enjoyed it enough, but I don’t think I’m going to continue the series.
