This is the first book in The Great Way trilogy (followed by The Way Into Magic and The Way Into Darkness). It’s a fantasy series following and old soldier and a young wizard fighting through the collapse of their society. The first book was a great introduction to the characters and made the story engaging. I’m writing this well after having finished all three of the books, so I don’t remember which things happened in which book, especially because the story runs together across the three books. Somewhere around the end of the first book or beginning of the second there’s a pretty big expansion in scope. The magic is pretty cool and I think the third book ties it together well. I’d definitely recommend this to any fantasy readers.
